Provenance is now a watermark — it travels only through real choices

Saturday was a quiet day on the frontier labs, and the most important news of the pass is exactly the kind that makes no noise: Anthropic has started watermarking the prose Claude generates, and a detection API is on the way. The move is in service of the EU AI Act transparency code, and it lands one day after this column argued that trust in AI was becoming an engineering problem rather than a hope. Provenance now has a checkable interface — with the honest caveat, stated by Anthropic in the same post, that a watermark only exists where the model had a genuine choice. The rest of the pass is the machinery around that: open weights crossing into near-frontier serving, and a runtime folding the browser into itself.

A watermark travels only through real choices, which is exactly the right line to draw

What happened. Claude’s newer models generate prose and translations with an invisible watermark using SynthID-Text, the method Google DeepMind published in Nature. Anthropic’s testing shows no hit to quality, and the watermark costs nothing in speed or tokens. Where an exact output is required — factual strings, code, most of a lightly-edited proofread — the watermark has nothing to act on, and generated images, PDFs and SVGs carry a C2PA content credential (the same open standard cameras and editors use) instead of a watermark. A detection API is announced but not yet shipped. Anthropic signs the whole thing to the EU AI Act transparency code that began with roughly 190 signatories in July 2026.

Why it matters. This is the first real industry move toward enforceable AI-authorship, and it lands exactly where yesterday’s trust-floor edition left off: trust in agents, now extended to the provenance of the text they produce, is something you engineer rather than hope for. The reading to keep straight is that this is not a stylometric detector — it is a keyed scheme, so detection exists only where the provider hands out the key. And it is structurally bounded: you cannot watermark a token that has only one right answer. That is not a flaw; it is the tell of what authorship even means. Claude owns its choices, not your facts, so the watermark concentrates exactly where “written by Claude” is a real question — essays and translations, not 2 + 2 = and not working code. The part that decides the story is the half not shipped: the detection API, and how freely the key gets shared.

Open weights got a Day-0 path to near-frontier serving, with reasoning as a per-request dial

What happened. Alibaba released Qwen3.8-2.4T-A95B (Qwen3.8-Max), its largest open-weight model: 2.4T total parameters, about 95B active per token, a fine-grained MoE with hybrid full and linear attention, a one-million-token context and 128K output. NVIDIA published a serving reference for a GB300 NVL72: over 4K tokens per second per GPU and 350+ tokens per second per user in FP8 on day zero, with no model tuning, plus recipes for vLLM, SGLang and Dynamo and a day-zero fine-tuning path in NeMo. The model carries built-in reasoning controls — low, high, xhigh — to dial inference depth per request.

Why it matters. The open-weights pricing-power story kept compounding this week, with Vercel’s telemetry showing open weights owning the most-served tier. Two things here are still new. The frontier-serving line moved: near-frontier open weights now come with a vendor reference guide, and a reference guide is how serving gets boring fast — boring being the product. And the reasoning dial is the vendor’s own honest answer to the cost question this column keeps asking. Fine-grained MoE is what makes 2.4T total economical: serving cost tracks the 95B active, not the headline number, so the headline is marketing and the active count is the bill. You should not be running this model on your fleet tonight, but the Day-0 softening of a 2.4T deployment is how the self-host tier keeps climbing before you’ve noticed.

The runtime absorbed the browser, and agent infrastructure just shed a dependency layer

What happened. Bun 1.4, the first stable release since the Rust rewrite, ships Bun.WebView — headless browser automation with no Puppeteer or Playwright: navigate, click with real user input, run JavaScript, screenshot, plus a CDP escape hatch. The same release brings Bun.cron(), Bun.Image, bun run –parallel, 1,517 additional passing Node tests, binaries about 17% smaller, and — on a long-running Bun app like Claude Code — production CPU roughly halving (p99 from 24% to 10%).

Why it matters. For anyone running agents that touch the web, browser automation inside the runtime instead of bolted on is the meaningful shift. CDP as a language feature means the browser-agent’s tooling stops being a dependency graph you coordinate and patch, and becomes something you call. And the leaner idle footprint is a real number on the hosting bill of a fleet of long-running agents — exactly the at-load cost frame this column reads everything by. When a runtime eats a whole category of external tooling in one release, the stack you operate just got shorter.

What I’m watching

The watermark detection API. The watermark itself is committed; the enforcement half is not. Two questions decide whether this stays a compliance artifact or becomes a working provenance tool: how broadly the key gets shared, and what the API does about the edit-resistance boundary Anthropic is honest about — light editing won’t defeat the watermark, a complete rewrite will. A key faucet open enough for tooling to use comfortably is the line between “detectable in principle” and “detectable in practice.”
