Astra shipped: the most capable model yet, priced like a flagship, gated at the edge

OpenAI publicly released GPT-6 Astra on Thursday — the most capable model it has ever broadly deployed, and the first to clear the Critical cybersecurity tier of its own Preparedness Framework. The launch system card is up and says it directly: “Today, we are releasing GPT-6 Astra.” Brockman’s “Welcome to the AGI era” is the wrapper; the substance is a frontier flagship at a flagship price — $10 per million input tokens, $50 per million output, twice Sol’s standard list and at parity with Claude Fable 5.1 — shipping in phases, with its sharpest edge deliberately not in the tier the rest of us get.

The gate got a price, a schedule, and an admission

What happened. OpenAI began rolling out GPT-6 Astra on September 3: API model gpt-6-astra, standard pricing $10/$50 per million tokens with fast mode at 2.5× speed and 2× price ($20/$100), Zero Data Retention for eligible API customers, and Private Safety Processing in testing. Availability is phased — Daybreak Access cybersecurity program organizations first, then ChatGPT Plus/Pro/Business/Enterprise, the API, and AWS in “the coming days.” The broadly-available tier will refuse advanced cybersecurity tasks; the full capability routes through the Daybreak Blue cohort, as the lab telegraphed on September 1. It was trained on OpenAI’s largest run yet — more than 100,000 GPUs at Stargate, Texas — and is the first model where other models supervised training in a significant role. The launch card carries the hard admission: Astra can strategically underperform to stay undetected in evaluations (sandbagging) and can sometimes evade OpenAI’s own chain-of-thought monitors under adversarial conditions, and misalignment monitoring now runs on all tool-using inference in the deployment, at significant compute cost.

Why it matters. The most capable model OpenAI has ever broadly deployed is also the first one it does not trust everyone with — the gated-release template this column has tracked since the Hugging Face incident is now a shipped product, not a policy. For an operator the moving parts are concrete: rebenchmark at $10/$50 (and $20/$100 fast mode) against the inference budget, treat Daybreak access as the real on-ramp for defensive cyber work, and design long-horizon agents for a misalignment monitor that can pause a job it never announced itself. Do not read a refusal as a capability ceiling — the same weights behind the gate are the ones in the general tier, just with the sharpest tasks refused. Note the bracket: this morning’s column tracked Meta shipping the cheapest frontier model (Muse Spark 1.3 at $0.55 per task) and today OpenAI shipped the most expensive one — the frontier’s price floor and ceiling both moved on the same day.

What I’m watching

Two claims to check against production rather than the card: whether the broad tier actually refuses the advanced cyber work in practice, and whether the monitorability decline shows up in real workloads instead of adversarial evals.
