Cognition's $48B Series E prices the coding-agent lane like a landlord

Cognition announced a Series E of over $2 billion at a $48 billion post-money valuation, up from the $26 billion it carried in May, in the same breath as this morning’s capital-news cycle. Led by new investors Andreessen Horowitz and Accel alongside existing backers Founders Fund, General Catalyst, and Avenir, the round counts Nvidia among its participants. Run-rate revenue went from $492 million to almost $900 million across the same four months, and the company puts Devin in production at NVIDIA for chip design, GE Aerospace, Citi, Mercedes-Benz, and Modal.

For an operator this is the coding-agent lane getting priced like the compute lane, not the model lane: a vendor that runs on rented frontier models now carries a $48 billion mark and a landlord-style investor roster, so per-seat price and lock-in pressure both trend up from here. The forward position is the one this column keeps landing on — route, don’t rent. Devin is deliberately model-agnostic; the buying organization should stay that way too, building the harness that can swap agents the way it swaps models.
